Description: Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus. Mycotoxins (literally Mold-Poisons) are small molecules produced by organisms of the fungi kingdom, commonly known as molds that are toxic to humans and other animals. There are hundreds that have been identified, but a much smaller number that are associated with indoor molds, and therefore potentially human health problems.
Mycotoxins have the potential for both acute and chronic health effects via ingestion, skin contact, and inhalation. These toxins can enter the blood stream and lymphatic system; they inhibit protein synthesis, damage macrophage systems, inhibit particle clearance of the lung, and increase sensitivity to bacterial endotoxins.
