Fasting Required: Yes – 12 Hours

Specimen: Blood

Description:
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a vascular specific marker that measures your body’s response to damage in your artery walls and the subsequent formation of vulnerable plaque which is prone to rupture. Individuals with elevated MPO levels are more than twice as likely to experience cardiovascular mortality. MPO levels are not likely to be elevated with chronic infections or rheumatologic disorders due to the fact that MPO is a specific marker of vascular inflammation and vulnerable plaque.

Methodology:
Immunoassay (IA)

Limitations:
Approximately 90% of patients with a P-ANCA pattern by IFA have myeloperoxidase-specific antibodies.

Alternative Name(s):
Anti-Myeloperoxidase, Churg-Strauss Syndrome, Crescentic Glomeruloephritis, MPO
