Description:
Determines abnormal distribution and concentration of lipoproteins in the serum which is an important risk factor in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Studies have shown that CAD is inversely related to LDL cholesterol (LDLC) particle size. An electrophoretic pattern demonstrating the presence of small, dense LDL particles (non-A) carries a threefold risk for developing CAD over the presence of larger, more buoyant LDLC particles
Includes
LDL Particle Number; LDL Small; LDL Medium; HDL Large; LDL Pattern; LDL Peak Size
Methodology
Ion Mobility
Clinical Significance
There is a correlation between increased risk of premature heart disease with decreasing size of LDL particles. Ion mobility offers the only direct measurement of lipoprotein particle size and concentration for each lipoprotein from HDL3 to large VLDL.
